8 Healthy Halloween Treats

October 18th, 2012 at 1:01 pm

Halloween comes and goes around here without a whole lot of hoopla. If I’m being honest, I really don’t like creepy things. I feel like there’s enough real life stuff already that’s pretty scary as it is, so why go looking for more spookiness?

Although I’m not much of a Halloween fan, I do love the harvest season and the abundance that comes with it. And the inevitable excuse to eat some healthy candy.

Little bites curb a sweet tooth for me much more effectively than a big honking slice of cake, so they’re usually what I enjoy as a treat every now and then. Scroll through this post for a collection of my favorite sweet nibbles. They’re perfect for Halloween or any time you need a healthy, refined sugar-free “sugar fix.”

In no particular order…

-

1. Pumpkin Seed Power Truffles

Nothing says “special occasion” like chocolate. These antioxidant-packed Pumpkin Seed Power Truffles are one of my favorite treats to make any time of year, but especially in the fall because of their warm, toasty spices.

-

2. Carrot Cake Energy Squares

Put some zip into your day with these healthy Carrot Cake Energy Squares that don’t really taste healthy at all. They’re a great sweet treat to grab when you want to kick a sweet tooth in a hurry.

-

3. Fudgy Brownie Bites

Everyone needs a chocolate fix once in a while, right? Take the edge off of your chocolate cravings with these Fudgy Brownie Bites. (They freeze well, too.)

-

4. Frozen Banana Split Bites

You’ll never miss a banana split when you can enjoy these mouthwatering Frozen Banana Split Bites! I made them this summer for a cool treat, but honestly I would eat them anytime of year…even in the middle of winter. They’re amazing.

-

5. Nutty Chocolate Candy

Making your own candy bars couldn’t be easier. These Nutty Chocolate Candy “shards” are fun to make and disappear in a hurry. Everyone loves their sweet flavor and crunchy texture.

-

6. Baked Apple Hazelnut Wedges

Earlier this week I shared these Baked Apple Hazelnut Wedges with you. They are the perfect autumnal treat when you want something light that still has loads of flavor and great nutrition.

-

7. Fresh Fruit

You really can’t get healthier or closer to nature than with a big bowl of fresh fruit for a treat. Isn’t this picture gorgeous? Big thanks to my talented sister for sharing it with us! I want to pop one of those oranges in my mouth right this minute.

Oranges, apples, pears, figs, and dried fruits are what I reach for most often when I need something sweet pronto. Fruit is the original fast food! It’s easy to store and even easier to eat. Just cut it up and serve it up. Add a little cinnamon or a pinch of sea salt to your fruit for extra flavor.

8. Vampire Teeth!

This is about as creepy as I get when it comes to Halloween. Turning apple wedges into vampire teeth. Scary stuff, I know.

Here’s how to make them:

  1. Cut an apple into quarters and cut away the little sliver of core in each quarter.
  2. With a sharp paring knife, cut a notch in the skin side of each apple wedge to create the open “mouth.”
  3. Fill the notch with nut/seed butter (I used sunflower seed butter in the photos).
  4. Press slivered almonds into the nut/seed butter to look like teeth.

Pretty cute, huh?

What are your favorite healthy Halloween treats? Do you like Halloween or are you scared of it like me?
