I can’t seem to get enough smoothies this time of year. With the dry winter air wreaking havoc on my skin and hair (major static alert!) and cold breezes turning my lips to wrinkly sandpaper, I’m craving moist, hydrating foods like never before.

Salads are my typical lunch of choice. I pack as many veggies as possible into my little Pyrex container to take to work. Dinners have been cleansing soups with mineral-rich chicken broth or veggie-centric meals heavy on the produce and light on the meat. Not that I don’t need some good grounding protein this time of year, I certainly do. But I just can’t pass up all those vibrant shades of green (kale! collards! spinach! chard!) in the produce aisle of my local co-op.

Smoothies are my breakfast mainstays most mornings whether it’s the heat of summer or the dead of winter. Nothing feels more soothing on a crackly throat than a creamy, cold smoothie. Several weeks ago I shared my old favorite, the Green “Creamsicle” Smoothie, for G-Free Mom’s Detox January Event. Today I have another one perfect for a hydrating winter breakfast: Coconut Mango Smoothie with Lime.

Lusciously creamy, this smoothie is the perfect balance of sweet and zesty. I’ve also made it with orange zest instead of the lime. Either way is delightful. The fat from the coconut milk gives this smoothie some bulk. I pair it with a handful of raw almonds or walnuts for a satisfying, thirst-quenching morning meal.

  1. MMMmm, looka delicious! I also crave smoothies, mostly for the way they make me feel. They always help zap some energy back into me during the winter :) Enjoy your day! Positive vibes….

  2. I too have been craving lots of veggies! There are nights that I will steam a bunch of chard and eat it all! Today I was just eating a huge salad of fresh veggies (which is a common lunch for me) and it was so good. Still waiting for my skin to magically hydrate though! This smoothie sounds lovely. I love mangoes and i haven’t bought one in a long time.

  3. I’ve had a ton of creamsicle smoothies since your last post. SO good. This one looks amazing too. The photo is beautiful. Thank you!

  4. I love mango smoothies. Mmm. This looks amazing.

  5. Hallie, we are so lucky that you are sharing two recipes for D-Tox January! I was smitten with this one just by the name and knowing what’s in it. Now seeing that gorgeous photo and reading about the need to hydrate this winter (I’m so with you on that, my dear), I must make this one for sure. My smoothie this morning is decidedly different though I am using a little coconut milk and coconut manna in mine to thicken it up. :-) Great post overall, Hallie–thanks!

    Hugs,
    Shirley

  6. I’m with you in craving all those green veggies this time of year. I love mango and this smoothie looks like another one to add to my winter smoothie rotation. Is it possible all these smoothies from Nicola’s round up are helping me keep the winter blues away? Even with the wretched cold and snow, I am much perkier this winter than I have been in a long time. Must be new GF friends and lots of veggies and fruit. A winning combo.

  7. mmm! to this I added a pinch of cayenne, a fat pinch of cinnamon, and chili powder. next time a little nutmeg and clove too! Delightful! I am loving your site!

  8. Can I used unsweeten almond milk instead of coconut milk?
